India might not always have had a population of over a billion people, but the subcontinent has always been home to many religions, ethnicities and empires, so there is much more than one story here of LGBTQ+ rights and recognition. In general, however, India was traditionally forgiving of LGBTQ+ partnerships, with the exception of the mostly Islam
